Had fun operating along I-85 and I-95 in NC, VA and MD while returning from doing some antenna work
in GA. Just 5 watts and a 5-foot base-loaded whip. N3TTT did the driving.

 

I enjoyed the unexpected openings on 10m and 15m on Saturday.

 

I had a hard time uploading my Cabrillo file.  I tried to put it in the example section from the
manual file http://b4h.net/cabforms/iaruhf_cab3.php step 2.   I used notepad++ to align all of the
fields with the example log line.  I kept getting errors and could not find the issue.  I finally
added to the end of the example file after about the 5th or 6th time and it worked.  Next time I am
going to use N3FJP software much easier.  Since I worked Phone SSB all of my contacts should be 59
instead of 599 everything else should be correct.

 

Nice activity; even picked up a few stations on 10 meters.

 

Noise level early in the contest was terrible.  20m and 40m went noise-quiet in late evening, and my
rate went thru the roof.  More than doubled my previous best score in this contest (in 2016).

 

Good to her 10m open to Europe for one of the first contests I
have entered in a long time. Time only allow a couple hours to
operate.  I beleive this to be my first IARU contest. 73 & thanks
QSOs

 

My first toe-dip into the world of CW.  Wow... I now see behind the door.  I'm definitely hooked. 
Thanks to many operators for their patience with me.  My heart was pounding along with my fistand my
nervous hand was shaking like a Vibroplex bug.

 

I didn't get to operate a great deal but was able to learn my way around my new rig and it's
features a bit. also, made a couple of 160m contacts while testing my latest coil configuration on
the inverted L. Bands seemed decent 10-160m, overall.

 

A small station enjoyed the best contest!

In this log are not many QSO's, but for me it is the first time in my life that I send a log to the
contest organisation. I learnt just in the last days what is 'cabrillo'. I used now a log software
for the first time.

 

First contest with the new contest call and a new antenna for the low bands. My intention initially
was, just a few hours. Suddenly I remembered my last year experiences/results and the idea to top
them. Finally 18 1/2 of 24 hours contesting and 5 1/2 hours sleeping. It was a great Weekend!

 

K3/KX3 /5watt to one dipole for 160/80, vertical for 40m, and one
tri-bander. Condx were ok, good fun during the night. tnx!

Station operated on simple wire antennas. 
A Half sized G5RV at 45 fet, sloping down to the ends, oreientated roughly NE/SW  and a EFLW on 80
and 160! 
Transmitter was a Kenwood TS-940S.
Thanks for all the fun.

 

This time I used a lighter SO2R setup with 3 elements triband at 10m without rotator for RUN high
bands + a vertical with automatic tuner at the base for SEARCH. For low band I used a dual band
160/80m inverted L and the same vertical as high bands but with an Inverted L configuration for 80 &
40m during the night. Nice contest but less propagation to NA and less HQ activity. IARU should
motivate the national members to be more active. Also, I experience more and more a lot of
high-power station suffering from deaf syndrome.

Due to a bad configuration of my logging program (N1MM), I had to re-enter manually my full log so
that I can generate a correct Cabrillo file. So the hours are correct but typed "00" for the
seconds, hoping it will not make troubles...

Actually, when first created my log database, I entered "DX" in the scroll down menu instead of
"IARU" :-(

Poor conditions, some short skip. Challenge to my indoor folded
dipole!

 

Log configuration problems and tiredness mean I lost
a couple of hours this year. Conditions seemed mixed - some good
propagation on 10 and 15m in Europe and even to the US. LF not quite
good as in some previous years. All good fun though.

It was quite a surprise to have an unexpected good
propagation. Even the behavior of 10 m was interesting
with quick and unforeseeable openings. The contest was
a real fun and made me stay on one band and finally at

for me is Ecuador a new country,and I didn't know what to expect this weekend,before the contest I
see that the propogation whas every day different, 

Saturday morning the first houres off the contest 20 meter to USA and SA,butt verry low signals and
than the bands are verry poor to the end off the afternoon,but work a few HQ's on 28 mhz but no
run,15 meter whas oké but not to much,than to 20 meter,Europe whas not so strong but verry good
pile up to the Usa,for a few houres,after that a diner break and start 21.00 on 7 mhz,not an easy
band with so much Qrm,no runs and did S&P and than give CQ,in the night verry poor bands again,and
02.00 I go to bed and whas this morning 05.00 again on the radio,switch from band to band and finish
on 20 meter on 11.59 utc with 8N8HQ ! 

the result so far are 1091 Qso's ,828,410 points,I have no idea iff this is a good score,but I did
my best in good and bad times during the contest, an experience in a new Country for me ! and that
whas fun !

Exceptional spread to the EU Exceptionally, there was no dead zone in the upper frequencies. It was
a very lively activity, an enjoyable competition. However, the distribution of SO2R to me was very
tiring. I only used the UCX log DX custer. The new phase-fed vertical, which I built specifically
for this competition, was very well tested.

Worked almost everyone I could hear, but didn't hear that many.

 

I only had a limited amount of time to make contacts, poor
propagation from my location plus thunderstorms on and off in the
afternoon and evening made for few contacts.

 

I was very happy with the results -- personal best for this
contest! Conditions weren't horrible and what a delight working
10 meters! Noise levels were low at this QTH which made digging
out the weak ones less of a challenge; but to be honest, MANY
European ops stuck with it when I had to dig out their calls over
several retries AND OTHERS STOOD BY! That's what I call "GOOD
MANNERS"...makes it a pleasure to participate. Many thanks to all
those good ops out there.

Operated from our Sailboat near St. Catherines Ontario. Great fun!

 

Sure did not expect to make over 100 QSOs on 10 meters including a few EU stations.  Nice surprise. 
Most of the bands had long openings which was also nice.  My 160 meter inverted L came down so nil
on Top Band. Lost several hours on Sat. afternoon due to heavy thunderstorms which kept coming
through this area.  That also kept the noise level high.  My apologies to those who called that I
could not hear over the thunder claps.

Near the start of the contest, W1AW/7 was sending "HQ" as his IARU name.  Tried to get him to change
to "ARRL" but he was too busy making rate to listen.  I did change "HQ" to "ARRL" in the log because
I did not know what n1mm+ would do with "HQ".  Also, at 1433, I worked KW3U who sent "03" for zone
rather than "08". At 1455, N2EI sent "05" for zone rather than "08".  Did not change either in my
log.  That will cost me two zones too.  Darn!.  My 3830 submission deleted those zones from my
claimed score  but they are still in my log.

 

K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care
retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. N3UM and
W3GB operated Muti-1 HP in the July 2019 IARU contest. We put in
19 hrs. BIC, all but 01-06 EDT, and got more QSO points, zone
mults, and HQ mults than ever before at K3CCR in 5 years 2014-
2017. Score was 24% above our previous best. We did well using
IARU strategy we learned in those 5 years; best band is 20m, 2nd
best 40m, emphasize mults and 5-point QSOs, and do mostly CW.
Few sunspots mean SSB rates to EU are OK for just a few hours.
And, mults are per band (not mode). Skimmer spots find mults and
5-point Qs fast, another CW advantage. We alternated ~2-3 hr.
shifts. Condx were better than expected for SFI = 67, especially
on 15m, and activity was pretty good. We spent the first 8 hrs.
on CW, on 20m. except for 1.4 hr. on 15m. around 15Z. Rate was
steady but slow, 14 to 30 Qs/hr. We tried runs, but rate fell
after 12-15 Qs. We had 179 Qs and 66 mults by 20Z. We then got
30 SSB Qs and 52 more CW Qs 2000-0009Z on 20m. We did 40m. CW
0021-0121Z and got 63 Qs and 33 mults, by far our best hour,
clicking spots. We then got 32 more Qs on 40m. N3UM took the
late shift at 0256Z and got 63 CW Qs in ~1.5 hr. on 80m. When 80
slowed, a check of 20m. showed amazing activity. From 0436Z to
0555Z QRT N3UM got 2 ZLs, 2 VKs, Kazakhstan in Zone 30, and 6
EUs in Zone 29. W3GB took the early shift 0951-1157Z and made 30
Qs on 20 CW and SSB; 27 were 5-pointers, 18 in EU zones 28 and
29, plus AF and SA.  He got 2 zone mults, JA in 45 and PR in 13.
Fun to get distant mults and lots of Q points in the last 4 hr.

 

Scoring system is crazy

 

This was my first IARU-HF effort. In spite of poor propagation had a great time operating CW 160 to
10 meters. K5LY

 

Glad to find some CW activity on 10 meters.

 

Very poor conditions for 100W and simple wire antennas in a mobile home park.

 

Nothing like a contest to learn to adapt strategy on the fly based
on conditions and what does and does not work, make some DX Qs and
have some good runs (best 1-minute rate was 300.)
It doesn't hurt to do it from a great station and a gracious host.
And it makes you appreciate getting to sleep finally.
Daytime 20 meter propagation to Europe was very light for the first
half of the contest, and I never heard a European on 15 meters.
Concerned that I would miss the HQs, I spent quite a bit of time trying
to work them. In retrospect, this was a mistake and hurt my Q total,
as 40m ended up opening early to Europe and staying open, and 20m had
a great late night opening with many of these same stations booming in.
That was a thrilling few hours with both bands simultaneously wide open
to both Europe and Asia.
This was my first full time IARU effort. I used two keyboards and found
SO2R techniques to be easier than with a single keyboard. Still need
more practice to get it seamless.

Decided to try operating from KH6 on our family vacation. Op time
and antenna very limited!!

 

Log issues I note -
NN2L gave me zone 5 although I think he is really in zone 8
K6CIM gave me zone 3 although I think he is really in zone 6
NN6T gave me zone 1 although I think he is really in zone 6
I asked each of the above for clairification and they confirmed so I logged what they sent.
W1AW/7 in the first hour on 40 CW was giving the mult name "HQ" instead of "ARRL" so I changed it in
my log.

What a fool he's got in mind to send it in five days. 7 days I understand, I can send on my day off.
Fools.

 

An eleven week old puppy kep;t me from putting in a bigger effort; still it was good hearing ten
open and hearing so many signals.  Later on in the evening twenty was open world wide which was
especially nice to hear.

 

I spent the twelve days at my annual KP4MD/P "Holiday Style DXpedition" on the beach in Puerto Rico
relaxing and preparing for my CW "Low Power" entry in the July 13-14 IARU HF World Championship
contest.  Here below is a photo of my portable "station in a suitcase" consisting of an Elecraft KX3
with the PX3 panadapter and KXPA100 amplifier, a Powerwerx 30 amp switching power supply, a netbook
PC for logging and a Buddistick vertical antenna on the balcony rail.  I have posted a mini video

I did my homework during the days leading up to the contest weekend by updating and practicing with
the N3FJP IARU contest log and planning operating times and frequencies with online propagation
tools and by checking hourly propagation patterns with WSPR and with on the air contacts. 

This was an earnest wholehearted effort to beat my previous claimed score of 90,336 which I knew
would be difficult with the dismal propagation of our current solar minimum.  I operated the full 24
hours contest period except for breaks during poor propagation in the early afternoon and a nap from
3-6 am.   

The final results were new records for me: 363 contacts, 1105 QSO Points, 106 multipliers and a new
personal high claimed score of 117,130.  The newly acquired PX3 panadapter duly impressed me during
my "hunt and pounce" operating.  The low efficiency of the nine-foot Buddistick whip antenna on 80
and 40 meters always presents a challenge, but persistence during the best propagation times yielded
37 multipliers on 40m and even 8 multipliers with my homebrew loading coil on 80m.  My most
impressive catches were ZM1A in New Zealand on 20m at 11:25 pm, VK4CT in Australia on 40m at 06:37
am, and NH2DX in Guam on 20m at 7:01 am all my local AST times. 

I found that my on the air operation and study of WSPR data prior to the contest weekend were most
helpful in planning operating times and frequencies.  The online VOACAP propagation predictions were
of little help.  Although I have observed VOACAP to accurately predict propagation trends during
periods of higher solar activity, these predictions have at times appeared overly optimistic during
our current zero sunspot number, even in the absence of geomagnetic disturbances.

This was my first HF contest and I jumped into it big time by playing on the radio for the whole 24
hours. I have a lot to learn from the other fantastic scores, but I am proud of how well I did for
my first time. This will really push me to get my Extra license as I heard many stations operating
in the areas I couldn't answer as a general. I look forward to my next contest and taking the
hundreds of things I learned this time around and putting them to the test again!

First time operating 24 hours from home in a long while.  KPA1500s
worked better than the operator!

 

Icom IC-7300,Heil Pro Micro Headset,Vectronics HFT-1500 Manual Tuner for 75 Meters only,and a
Modified ZS6BKW up 50 feet,running N-S at 6,053 feet elevation from DN-71 in Laramie County
Wyoming.Tough sledding compared to last years event,with lots of noise on 20,and the usual QRN on 40
from thunderstorms in nearby states. I had way too many "dupe" contacts, and a ton of "driveby"
non-contester contacts who were clueless regarding their ITU Zone,and who were just looking for a
Wyoming contact,as well as the always entertaining "Please Copy" and "Roger-Roger" types (that do
nothing for our contesting Q rates).90% of my contacts were made with US stations,5% with Canada,and
a mere 1% of my total log consisted of Q's with Brazil,Hawaii,French
Guiana,Australia,Belize,Bonaire,Cayman Islands,Chile,Costa Rica,Cuba,Curacao,Dominican
Republic,Guatemala,Puerto Rico,U.S. Virgin Islands,and Venezuela. My last sleep break went way
long,after sleeping thru two different alarms,... getting old!),so I missed out on the last five
hours of this contest except for the last ten minutes.Thanks to those that provided fills during
some of the more difficult contacts.Great to hear a handful of YL Ops including NV9L,(we need many
more),and a few young new contesters as well.Another "100 Watts and a Wire" effort is in the books
from my modest,one wire station.I'm already looking forward to next year's IARU HF Championship!
November Seven Many Zebras Walking

 

Good contest better than normal conditions.

 

Central Europe was really loud into NE Iowa on 40 meter CW Saturday night.

 

I had intended for this to be a 24-hour effort and it
started well at 0500 local with a pot of coffee on the
desk. Other than that it was pretty much a 20 M contest
after the sun came up, no complaints. I managed a few QSOs
on 15 M, but it was mostly local stuff.

10 hours into the contest, my PC froze. After
rebooting, it would not let me log in. Long story short,
after three hours of trying to fix Windows 10, I gave up
and grabbed my laptop, then started installing all the SDR
and logging software to get back on the air. I
lost six hours operating time on Saturday afternoon,and was
unable to operate SO2R on the laptop due to the limited
processing power, but at least I finished with 18 hours BIC
time.

This is a valuable lesson for
trying to operate a contest with an SDR - have a backup PC
ready to go or be ready to shut down early if the PC dies.
I have to confess that I never really expected this to
happen, and I could have just
plugged in my Yaesu
FTdx5000 and used the laptop for logging, but being
pig-headed, I thought I could fix the problem quickly. Just
another radio lesson.

for the Qs, and especially those that were patient when
there were lags in CW being sent by my old
laptop.

The amplifier only supports 80-40-20-15 (old SB-221), and only gave 180 watts on 15. Low (25 feet)

few "normal" stations on air. Combining contesting and family vacation gave limited operating time.
All in all, it could have been worse. My first IARU contest.

Usually, the IARU HF Championship marks the start of our summer vacation. This results in checking
we got all our stuff packed in the caravan for our summer trip, leaving no time for particpation in
the contest. This time, however, our journey starts one week later so I could spend some time in the
shack. 
Great to work so many old and new friends and HQ stations despite the lack of sunspots.

 

There was good activity and good propagation for Europe
in the contest. DX was difficult so I worked not much
of it.  But I enjoyed the contest and working mixed.

I used S&P in all QSO's with 4 watt down to 8 mW (hi)
When signals are over S9+10dB, I reduce my power below 100 mW
For less than 500 mW I use the PA1B attenuator from the PA1B's QRPp page
Out of 109 QSO's, 12 QSO's were made with 80 mW or 36 mW and 1 with 8 mW

Not a drop of rain on this desert island of Bonaire for months
until 1 hour into the contest when a passing thunderstorm forced
me to close down for 1.5 hours. Murphy was also present when,
in the middle of an EU run, my 13.8V PSU blew up, which meant
I could no longer use the Icom IC-7300. I lost another hour
opening up the PSU to remove a fried gecko's tail, but the
PSU was toast (as was the poor gecko), before having to rewire
the station with my 13-year old Yaesu FT-2000. In all, more
than 100 QSOs more than last year, but fewer Zones and HQ stns
overall for only a slightly higher claimed score. Was fun
though, and I hope to be back next year (with a new PSU). 73

Always pleasure to operate in IARU HF. Using multiband 
vertical antenna and 200W.73s Janez S51DX

 

Working with my FT-2000 and SPE EXPERT 1.3K linear amplifier,
from S54E contest location on Gorski vrh, with his antennas. It
is vertical for 160m, but without radials and Beverages, because
landowner had to cut the grass all arround. For 80m it should be
4Square, but last thunderstorms with a lot of lightning, made
some damagde to two of baloons, s I left with only vertical wire.
Delta loop was for 40m and 3el Optibeam for upper 3 bands. Not
top equipment, but much much better than mine at home! Weather
stand somehow this time, only small nearby thunderstorm on the
beginnng of contest, with a small rise of statics in W direction.

 

We operated from three QTH's SK0UX, SK3W and SM6MCW.

My first IARU contest, but not my last! Had my newly repaired rotator installed in the tower just
before the contest ... fb timing!j

Did some heavy SO2V ops during Saturday ... cross mode and cross band, what fun!

 

Brought MTR3BLCD with trapped EFHW to fishing camp in
Saskatchewan.  I'll try to send some pics.  Rest of the camp was
fascinated by the contest.  Did way better than I expected QRP in
northern SK.  Great trip.

 

I had a lot of fun operating IARU this year. Rig used FT-897D
Antennas Classic 33 @ 55 ft Loop skywire on 40.

 

With an ever increasing ambient noise level, operating HF in a
suburban environment is becoming more and more depressing. Couple
poor propagation and a 20m S5 noise level in a 400Hz bandwidth
and onequestions if it's worth bothering......

 

Could only spend a couple of hours on IARU.

 

End fed random length long wire antenna at 25 ft at connection point. Manual tuner. Bands
10,15,20,40,80 meters

 

Limited operation this year due to antenna wind damage.

This year was my first attempt at the IARU HF contest. In fact I didn't realize a contest was going
on when I happened to turn on a radio Saturday after it had already started and heard a station
calling CQ contest. So I read the rules, downloaded a log from N3FJP, and dived in with the only
radio I had set up at the moment. The weekend before I had finally returned my TenTec Argonaut 515
to the air for the first time since moving over 2 years ago so I threw out several calls on Saturday
afternoon and had three contacts and was in business. Let the fun begin! Who says you need the Icom
7300 to have fun in a contest? Band conditions on 10 were a bust for me much to my disappointment.
Much the same with 15m where I only made one contact Saturday afternoon with NU1AW, but hey, it was
a multiplier. The bulk of contacts, about 2/3rds, were made on 20m with the rest on 40m. I also
didn't make a single contact on 80m despite getting back on the air at 5am Sunday morning and it
wasn't for lack of trying. I just didn't hear any contest stations on 80m. Overall, I really liked
the 24 hour format of the contest and the different multipliers such as the HQ stations added to the
fun. The contest didn't feel frenetic and I even took time to chat briefly with a POTA station in
Kentucky. Thank you to ALL the contesters who worked my 3w signal. I only had I think 4 calls that I
remember not being able to be completed due to the bands fading during a QSO. One thing was obvious
this year. I learned that whether you have 1000W or 3W the atmosphere is either with you or against
you. If you answer a lonely station calling CQ and he can't hear you after 3 calls you might as well
move along and try again later. He might be gone or the wind might be blowing in your favor. Working
the grey line Saturday I managed to bust two pileups on the first call with 3W. Most of the time if
it was a pileup I was the doormat, so patience ruled and I waited till the operator caught up or I
just kept moving along to the next station calling cq and checked back later. I look forward to next

Pipeline to Europe on 20 meters at around 0130-0430 UTC July 14.  Worked Spain, England, Sweden, and
Russia from California with only 4 watts CW and a 2-element wire yagi up 45 feet, and heard many
others. Best DX since 2015. Looks like the sunspot cycle ain't quite over yet?

Wasn't able to operate but a short time on Saturday night, so
focused on working 80m only and snag a few new DX on the band,
(which I was able to!).  I always enjoy operating HF
Championships and hope to be able to put some more time in the
chair next year.

 

Surprise openings on 10 and 15 made this fun!  Couldn't believe 20 was open all night long.

YP0HQ is the contest call for A.R.R, one of the largest hamradio association in YO. YP0HQ is a new
contest experiment that wants to show the possibility to attract and offer training condition for
new and more contest operators in a team that has no access to the main team of IARU. We consider
that to do not be a IARU member is not a problem to be part of a team!   
society members. Many operators ask for a new category or to extend the number of national teams
that can transmit society exchange numbers (599 ARR) in IARU HF CONTEST. Anyway we are not
interested to be listed for score but for training to work in a young and experimental team that has

band conditions not favourable but it
was a nice weekend.

 

Conditions again very poor with no 10m and very little 15m. 80m
was pretty good but I missed out on 40m getting the QSY time a bit
early in the morning. I was surpised to be working into USA still at
about 0830 local time with the sun high in the sky already!
Used an ICOM 736 barefoot with 100 watts into an inverted L on 80m,
a 4el yagi at 23m agl on 20m,  3 el yagi at 23m agl on 15m and my
double moxon side by side and fed in phase on USA short path on 40m.
Thanks to all who make it possible! I hope my cancer lets me have
another go next year with maybe better sunspots!

 

Bad propagation on 10m this year. Some local power line noise and high static qrn on low bands on
sunday. Impossible to hear some weak signals, sorry. But always a lot of fun to operate the IARU
Contest. Thank to Oms PY5EG for let me use his super station, also to Neto PU2TIB for the support
